Printed Shirt Care: How to Maintain Statement Typography

Every single We Speak Shirts garment is printed on demand with Direct-to-Garment printing, also called DTG. The water-based ink enters the cotton fibres instead of forming a plastic film on top. The print stays soft, breathable, and part of the fabric. This is different from screen printing or vinyl transfers, which sit on the surface and can crack or peel after repeated washing. DTG becomes the fabric itself. It will last years if you handle it right. Here is how.

Wash inside out. Friction from the washing machine drum and contact with zippers or buttons abrade the printed surface. Turning the shirt inside out keeps the print facing inward, away from everything else in the load. Use a gentle cycle at 30°C maximum. Skip bleach, it eats through the ink bond. Skip fabric softener, it coats the fibres and reduces the print's grip on the cotton. A mild detergent is all you need.

Air dry. A tumble dryer combines high heat with mechanical tumbling. That strips moisture from the ink, making it stiff, brittle, and prone to cracking. Hang the shirt on a rack or lay it flat, out of direct sunlight. Direct sun can fade both the fabric and the print over time. The 240 g/m² open-end cotton keeps its natural softness when it dries on its own. This one habit, skipping the dryer, makes more difference than any other single rule. It is also the one people resist most, and the one that visibly extends the life of a printed shirt.

Iron inside out, on low heat. Never touch the iron directly to the print, the heat melts the ink on contact. If you must press the printed area, place a thin cotton cloth, such as a clean kitchen towel, over it first. The cloth distributes the heat evenly and protects the typography. This step adds thirty seconds and prevents a mistake you cannot undo.

Four rules. None of them complicated. Inside out. 30°C maximum. Air dry, never tumble. Iron with a cloth barrier, never directly on the print. Together they keep the typography sharp through dozens of washes. A DTG print on heavyweight organic cotton that is treated this way consistently will outlast most screen prints and all vinyl transfers. The difference between a shirt that still looks new after a year and one that looks worn out after a month is these four habits at home.
